Oprah and Michelle Obama give most Black women something to be proud of. But are they helping common women deal with their everyday struggles of getting out of their own way? Once you get a job at a TV station or marry a Harvard Law grad then you can follow their plan.

If no one remembers MJB once she’s gone is not the only measure of her impact, it is also the better decisions that were made by her fans that placed them in a better situation. Immeasurable, yet very impactful.

I might be bias, but I love me some Mary. Songs like “Not Gon Cry” & “Enough Cryin” have helped me through some rough times. And I agree – any person who stands up for social change, despite the capacity, should be applauded.

I definitely see where the misunderstading of refering to MJB as a hero might be misconstrued. Comparing her to individuals such as Mandela, MLK, etc, would indeed be a mistake but her personal growth is definitely a journey that should be recognized. Each of these “heroes” that J has mentioned ALL have made a great impact on either someone, our world, or our culture. Through her music and allowing her personal journey to be expressed for all of us to experience, I believe that she can in fact be called a hero by some little girl who may have believed that because of her background and environment, she may not have had the opportunity to love herself and succeed in such a way as MJB has. As an admirer of her music, and initially not liking MJB persona, her growth is OBVIOUS and very much respected. Even though she is not my hero, to discard her as a possibilty in the eyes of someone else, may be premature. Ask a racist, if MLK is their hero….. most likely not…..

Much respect to MJB as a POSTIVE black woman…..
Thank you for helping our young woman see that GROWTH and CHANGE our possible

Yes, you are correct…. I do not agree with the hero aspects. I will give her motivational speaker/ artist because she does undeniably influence many women In the urban areas but hero I think is a bit much. Her singing about personal triumphs does little for humity or paving the way for people of color to excel as human beings. Your pastor, good pick! Nelson Mandela, superb choice…. Mjb, ball dropped. It’s safe to. Assume this array of HEROS Is in celebration of black history month….and I don’t think she’ll be remembered a few years after her death…. I’m just saying, I’m sure other black women have had a more positive approach to influencing our people. But its your show and you can run it how you like. I respect that.

I see you disagree. Well honestly I don’t listen to her music on the regular, but I have noticed a progression of growth. Many women tell me that her music is increasingly inspiring. And the idea of change is powerful. So many people live within their situations with no hope of improvement. So it is not always where you are at that can be celebrated, but the elevation of the journey. No more drama.

Instead of holding people up on a complete pedestal, we often should appreciate only what they do well, and keep moving.
