Haiti – Do not get in the way of my vengeance, said the Lord
I got up early the morning after the earthquake in Haiti to pray. As my prayer partner and I began to cry out for worldwide relief and support, miraculous rescues, protection for missionaries/orphans and the immediate needs of the people; the Lord interrupted our flow. Clearly I heard the voice of the Lord say, “Do not get in the way of my vengeance!” Though we continued to pray for the humanitarian cause, we could not overlook the spiritual implications of the situation. My heart breaks for the needs of the people in Haiti as a result of the earthquake but the truth is, the
problem in Haiti is deeper than was has happened this week. My husband and I went to Haiti last summer. It was a trip that changed my life. It is true that, in America we are rich in the poorest of slums in comparison to the living conditions in Haiti.
I was not surprised to see how prevalent religious spirits were in a country that has been dedicated unto voodoo. I understand the principle that all witchcraft must be attached to a religion. Even satanists have their own bible. It amazed me that as poor as the people are they were still able to afford to paint their vehicles and buses with religious graffiti. The ironic part is that behind the pictures of Jesus, crosses and other religious symbols: are the voodoo gods that are really worshipped. At the end of my message I did an altar call in Haiti in an open field. I asked the people to renounce their worship to voodoo gods. I was shocked to see that 95 % of the people came to the altar to repent. My heart dropped into my stomach when I saw 7 and 8 year old children bringing their voodoo fetishes and laying them at the altar. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is not rooted in sympathy, but the truth. The truth can sometimes be an offensive stumbling block to those who do not want to receive it.
There is a two-fold situation in Haiti. First we should attend to the needs of the people in this horrible calamity. Anyone that does not have compassion for the human suffering that exists in Haiti has a cold heart. On the other hand, giving humanitarian relief is only putting a band aid on the problem. What will we do after the next hurricane or earthquake? The axe needs to be put to the root in Haiti to cut off the darkness lurking against the people in Haiti. Yes, they were the first blacks to be liberated from slavery but it is no secret that pacts were made with the gods of Santeria and Yoruba. The demons have not forgotten the promises that Haitian ancestors made to them. The spiritual leaders of the country must cry out in repentance from witchcraft and pride. I believe that restoration for Haiti is the will of God and He will heal the land! The church needs to do spiritual warfare prayer for Haiti. We cannot expect the world to understand this plight…the carnal mind does not and cannot understand the things of the spirit.
Haiti has been under the curse of the lie of voodoo for too long and the people need truth. The day before the quake I was witnessing to three Haitian young men in the mall. I talked to them about the idolatry in their country and named gods like Oshun, Ogun, Shango and Obatala. They were surprised that I knew the names of these gods, but did not deny that they were familiar with them. It is their way of life! I am not saying that every Haitian is involved in voodoo. I am saying that it is the familiar spirit that rules over their lineage and must be dealt with. The efforts to help Haiti are a great social cause and need. But as believers we must deal with the spiritual nature of the problem. If we really love the people of Haiti, we cannot ignore the pact that Haiti made with the devil and the curses that are continually released because of it.
Our first response to this terrible situation should be to provide for the needs of our Haitian brothers and sisters. Living in Florida privileges me to have Haitian members in my churches. I pray for them and know their struggles. But if we do not pull down the strongholds of Haiti and tear down the altars of the lies and deceptions of the devil, we do our Haitian neighbors no justice.
Many may ask about the familiar spirits that rule over America and God’s judgment here. God deals with the sins of nations as He sees fit. America may not be going through what Haiti is going through but we have our bed to lie in also. We have some dedications that are manifesting in a different way in our country. As we release compassionate prayers toward those that are suffering, we must remember not to get in the way of the vengeance of God. His thoughts and ways are not like ours. As we focus on the natural troubles of the world, God’s heart breaks for the souls that are eternally tormented in the pits of hell with no hope of relief. God’s vengeance does not come out of getting back at men or the devil. It comes out of the truth of His word and His love for His people. God’s vengeance deals with us where we are now so that we will not have to be dealt with in the final judgment.
In closing, many may ask this question, “Did the devil or God cause the destruction in Haiti”? The answer is both! Because of broken covenants with God and a dark covenant with the devil, God allowed it…just as He sent a lying spirit to the mouths of the prophets in II Chronicles 18:20-22. Then there came a spirit and stood before the Lord, and said, I will entice him. And the Lord said unto him, wherewith. And he said I will go out, and be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And the Lord said, Thou shalt entice him, and thou shall prevail: go out, and do even so. Now therefore, behold, THE LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouths of these prophets, and the Lord hath spoken evil against thee. Never forget, GOD is in control of everything. Vengeance is not the devil’s…BUT GOD’S! Who can judge God’s
vengeance? He is a jealous God! The flood in the book of Genesis, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and many other accounts in the Bible prove this. Let’s not point fingers at Haiti but focus on the word and the will of God in Deuteronomy the 28th chapter for ourselves. If we obey God’s commandments, we will be blessed. If we disobey them, WE WILL BE CURSED!!! Selah…

The religion Vodun derives from an African word for Spirit. Vodun is practiced in geographic areas such as Benin, Dominican Republic, Ghana, & Haiti. Like Christianity, the Vodun followers believe in both good in evil. They also believe in one main God, and other spirit forms such as, Agwe (Spirit of the Sea), Ayza (Protector), Ezili (Female spirit of Love), Zaka (Spirit of Agriculture), and etc.
According to an article that I read on ReligiousTolerance.org, people commonly mistake the practice of Vodun for Voodoo.
When we say that Haiti is a Voodoo country, are we referring to Voodoo or Vodun?
Vodun and Vodou present with vast differences. The common misconception is that Vodun was derived in Haiti and is synonymous with witchcraft. When its correct origin is of west Africa were Haitians were enslaved and is a stated religious practice. Now voudou, regardless of the Anglo perception is a practice used to fight off ill spirits of witchcraft. It is also used for healing and only used to deal with the unruled and known unforgiving offences. As Americans this would be all the showing out with large items, bling and various other greedy displays of materialistic behavior. Many of the people in Haiti practice catholicism as “religion” of choice. People can read and construct misinformed, preconceived notions about the people of Haiti but unless you are the haitian people, YOU DO NOT KNOW THE HAITIAN PEOPLE
Religion is a very tricky subject to discuss. This letter is the epitome of that fact. This one-way correspondence leaves little room for debate, and it damns a people. This arrogant centrism is the reason why many people turn away from religion all together.
As a Christian I truly have an understanding of the benefit to the spirituality of such structures. But I choose not to judge other peoples opinions and practices, I leave that up to God. Judgment is above my pay grade.
The real and tangible problem with Haiti is economic, which I’m more comfortable speaking on. Cooperation leads to stability, which leads to economic prosperity, which leads to better education, which leads to better infrastructure built with knowledge and accumulated assets harnessed by a productive economy.
But what are the reasons that Haiti is the poorest, most dangerous and corrupt place in the western hemisphere? I don’t question our relief efforts, that is the humane thing to do. But we are faced with the question of how we help and how this help will be received. Do we act as MASH, and patch them up so next year they can continue their internal strife? Or do we take this opportunity to improve their outcome?
Religion is so abstract and full of fallacies and differing perspectives. It is normally used to gain cooperation and control. So are the historical religious practices impactful to the Haitian peoples situation? Should we send the missionaries to convert them to our style of praise? Will that help?
Senseless ignorance! Where are you from? What have your people done to shame you? Vodou is NOT a religion it is a practice of healing. Selah… no! With all due respect for persons I do not know Mrs Daniels may not pass judgements on brief visits to the land. I second my sister, you are not haitian people , so you may not judge haitian people for you do not know the haitian people. There is a term we call people like you in my country … may god be with you.
They call him franse…. lol Li pale franse! They will never understand…. I give up!
