My Grandmother is full Haitian and my Grandfather is full Dominican and this quote reminds me of a Haitian folk tale that they tell young women who are coming of age! The first line is “nunca deje al hombre tener su espiritu”! When translated to english it states to never let a man control/have your spirit! It always confused me how two cultures that share the same island can be so different! My grandmother was taught to never let a man be so important in her life as to where he controls her spirit and she loses herself. My grandfather was taught the exact opposite “Machismo”! Yet, they’ve gelled together to create an awesome union! Um? I know this is going way off subject but with two strong cultures how does one prevail when raising children? My father (a 50/50 mix of Haitian and Dominican) primarily speaks spanish! My mother never learned spanish but my father dares us to speak to him in any language other than spanish! Rarely we’ll converse in the Haitian Creole but only when he initiates! I wonder how one culture dominates the other when raising children? To tie this quote into my ADHA thought process, with my grandmothers upbringing I wonder what perspective she saw life through when marrying my grandfather and how come my mother never opened her eyes to see through my fathers perspective? Generally speaking!
